As expected host Ricky Gervais gives an outrageous opening monologue at the 73rd annual Golden Globes.
We’ve seen Ricky Gervais host the Golden Globes before, so we were definitely expecting the comedian to not hold anything back when it came to making fun of the attending Hollywood elites, but did the funny man make more laugh-worthy or cringe-worthy moments at the top of the show? Let’s take a look at some of the most outrageous moments from his opening monologue.
Ricky kicked off the punchlines joking about going into hiding after the show to avoid any backlash. Hiding so good that not even Sean Penn could find him. No, the ladies weren’t safe either, Ricky poked fun at Caitlyn Jenner’s major transformation not helping out the stereotype of women drivers, to Jennifer Lawrence’s plea for actresses to be given equal pay despite her $52 million dollar salary.
By far his biggest “groaner” joke was his bit about “Spotlight” being Roman Polanski’s favorite date movie. Cue the uncomfortable crickets...
The biggest digs Ricky made, though, were at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association itself, which also proved to be his most successful jokes to the room. He told the nominees that no one cares about the award besides them and the studios that paid for them to win, and that beyond that winning is straight up “meaningless”. Ouch. In true Ricky Gervais fashion held no punches during the entire monologue and was absolutely unapologetic about every quip he made, but what else did we expect?
