YouTube megastar and Voice Alum Christina Grimmie was fatally shot and killed at her Orlando meet and greet on Friday evening.
– The world, and our Clevver family – and really anyone who was touched by life and voice of Christina Grimmie are all devastated today as the news of her tragic passing sinks in. Christina, was taken from this world too soon – doing what we she loved most, performing her music and connecting with her fans.
Following her concert at The Plaza Live theater in Orlando on Friday night, Christina was signing autographs and meeting her fans, when Kevin James Loibl, a 27-year-old man, who travelled from St. Petersburg, Florida, shot her in the head. Christina’s brother, Marcus, who was with her at the meet and greet, tackled the shooter to the ground, and it was during this struggle, Kevin James Loibl fatally shot himself. An emergency medical team attempted to resuscitate Christina at the scene, and she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police credit Marcus with saving the lives of many others on the scene, with the Orlando police Chief John Mina saying: “It is unknown what his plans were for after killing Christina, but very heroic action by Marcus Grimmie to jump in could have prevented loss of life there.”
On Saturday, Marcus, shared this heartfelt, beautiful message on Facebook: Christina was more than my sister. She was my partner in life. A superstar. A goofball. Introverted. And a friend to everyone. Genuinely, but above all…she was my baby sister. She loved the Lord and her family and was always there for me and I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without her.”
.
Christina Grimmie’s longtime manager Brian Teefey, who is also Selena Gomez’s stepfather, released this heartbreaking statement on Christina’s social media saying “All I wanted to do was assist her in achieving her musical dreams while protecting her from the pitfalls associated with the business. I never could have imagined this horrific event being one of the pitfalls needing to be avoided.”
While the identity of the shooter has been confirmed, the motive is still unknown. However, we do know that the gunman was carrying 2 handguns, 2 additional loaded magazines and a large hunting knife.
.
Witnesses at the scene of the shooting say Christina greeter who shooter with arms wide open ready to hug him when he took her life, and that was truly who this extraordinarily talent young woman was - she had a real, unbridled love for people. I feel honored to have had the chance to know Christina over the last several years and to watch her career explode. All the while, she remained the same silly, humble, sweet person she was when we first met years ago. When I saw her a few weeks ago, one of the first things she talked about was her family and how we had to take a selfie to send to her mom so we could say hello. And in the midst of this unspeakable tragedy that is where our prayers and love are being sent – to the Grimmie family. A gofundme page has been set up for them and I really want to encourage all of you to donate even $1 – this will make a huge difference in their lives as they mourn the loss of Christina. We will have that link in the info section – please share this you’re your friends and family. Again, our prayers and thoughts are with them in this time of need. And we’ll never forget the young woman who called all of us her friend and her fan, her Frand. Rest in peace Christina Grimmie. At the Clevver headquarters, I’m Joslyn Davis.
