When in Kelantan you must eat traditional Kelantanese food which includes some of the most delicious Malay food EVER! We're in Kelantan, a state situated on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia with our friends Amry and Aida. We're there to celebrate Hari Raya Haji with their family (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAUoJnfC9sk) but also take the time to hunt down some delicious local food!

First up are nasi kerabu, nasi dagang and nasi berlauk. These dishes are commonly eaten for breakfast in Malaysia.

Nasi kerabu is made up of fresh, raw salads, kerepok (fish crackers), salted egg, blue coloured rice (traditionally coloured with the petals of the butterfly pea flower), fried coconut and sambal (chilli). This nasi kerabu also features budu a fermented fish condiment which originates from Kelantan. We also have some ayam goreng or fried chicken on the side.

Nasi dagang is made up of sticky rice and white rice, cooked vegetables, boiled egg, fried coconut and fish gulai. The fish is commonly a tuna type fish and gulai is the style in which it is cooked- a coconut milk gravy which includes turmeric and other aromatics.

Nasi berlauk is made up of white rice, a gulai dish, cucumber and sambal.

All three dishes are amazing and definitely worth eating!

We also sample pulut pagi a mound of sticky rice either sweet or savoury, topped with freshly grated coconut. The savoury pulut pagi includes a dried, salted fish. Pulut pagi was commonly eaten during times of flood when there was no fresh rice available. Our final treat is akok, a Kelantanese kuih made from eggs, wheat flour and pandan. Kuih are eaten as snacks or desserts and the akok would go perfectly with a cup of teh or kopi. They're quite eggy and very light. Delicious!

On the way home we grab some roadside snacks- etok which are a river clam cooked with salt and lemongrass and bahulu- a type of sponge cake.

What a day of eating Kelantanese foods! We have fallen in love with Kelantanese cuisine and can't wait to return to Kelantan to try more!

A huge thank you to Amry and Aida for being such epic hosts and for showing us around Kelantan. You two are THE BEST!!
