Nasi lemak is arguably the most famous food in Malaysia and is commonly regarded as Malaysia's national dish. Nasi lemak bungkus is the most traditional nasi lemak you’ll find. Wrapped up in a banana leaf this little parcel of coconut rice, sambal (chilli sauce), roasted peanuts and half a boiled egg is the perfect breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper or snack! We have become addicted to these little parcels of delicious-ness since arriving in Malaysia! After releasing our video on our meal at Village Park Restaurant in Petaling Jaya (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCKg9wlXzT0) a tonne of our subscribers told us we had to try the simplest, most traditional version. The nasi lemak at Selera Jaya 223 came up a lot as a recommended place to visit to sample nasi lemak bungkus so off we went!

There are two nasi lemak stalls at Selera Jaya 223. The packets with the blue chop (stamp) and those with the red chop. The blue stall is open from morning until late at night whilst the red stall is only open from around 7:00pm in the evenings until late. We sampled both nasi lemak and found them to be very different. The blue chop nasi lemak we found to have a much spicier sambal and the rice to contain a bit more bite and texture. The red chop nasi lemak had a much sweeter sambal and the rice was a lot fluffier and softer. We also sampled some otak otak, a fish paste made up of aromatics, minced fish and tapioca flour which is grilled in a banana leaf. It was a delicious accompaniment to the nasi lemak!

Tip: Upon arrival simply pick a table (you’ll be besieged by waiters wanting you to sit in their section) and grab a tray of nasi lemak bungkus from either or both of the stalls (there are 5 to a tray). You’ll pay any of the waiters floating around at the end depending on how many nasi lemak you consume).

Thanks to all our subscribers who recommended we visit Selera Jaya 223 to sample nasi lemak bungkus!
