When in Melaka eat Nyonya laksa and Nyonya cendol! Nyonya or Peranakan cuisine is a mash up of Malay and Chinese food. The Baba Nyonya are the descendants of Chinese migrants who intermarried with the local Malay in areas of Malaysia including Melaka and Penang.

We visit Jonker 88 a halal restaurant that specialises in both of these delicious foods. We sample the Nyonya Assam laksa a noodle soup which has a tangy, spicy fish and tamarind broth. It is loaded with rice noodles, raw cucumber and onion, prawns, fish balls, egg and beancurd skin. It's so bold in flavour and packs a punch in the pedas (chilli hot) stakes!

The Baba Laksa is a noodle soup which has a creamy, spicy coconut broth. The noodles are rice vermicelli and like the assam laksa it contains prawns, egg, tofu skin, cucumber and onion. The flavour is beautiful- it's less 'in your face' compared to the assam laksa- but no less delicious.

Cendol must be on your list of things to eat in Melaka. It's special because the gula melaka in Melaka is rich, thick and smoky. It's the real deal. A bowl of Baba cendol features shaved ice, cendol noodles, kidney beans, santan or coconut milk and the syrupy gula melaka. It is to die for!!

All of these dishes are a must eat when in Melaka. We will be sampling more of Melaka famous food during our 7 day jalan jalan cari makan adventure.
