As of now, Kesha’s performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards have been canceled and it’s all because of Dr. Luke and Kemosabe Records.
Kesha has slowly been making her musical comeback, but it looks like that has all come to a complete stop.
Roughly a week after rumors surrounding Kesha’s performance at the BBMAs circulated, it has been revealed that the singer will not be taking the stage at the award show on May 22nd. Apparently Kesha originally accepted the invite to perform on the show and got the written approval she needed from her record label, but according to Dick Clark Productions, the company that produces the award show, Kemosabe Records decided to take back their approval after QUOTE “a media report on Wednesday, May 11th regarding Kesha’s appearance on the Billboard Music Awards.”
Apparently the report they’re referring to is the TMZ story that was published on May 11th about Kesha supposed “statement performance” at the BBMAs with Dr. Luke being the main focus of the performance. That obviously did not sit well with the producer. Kesha reportedly tried to soothe things over, but the producer was not having it.
A source told People QUOTE, “Kesha wrote a statement to Luke yesterday and told him the performance wasn’t about him at all. He had a full day to consider, but still wouldn’t allow her to perform.” However, another insider is denying that Kesha never wrote the letter and even called it “an urban myth.”
Not too long after the news of Kesha’s canceled performance was revealed, Kesha hopped on her Instagram to respond to it all. The singer wrote QUOTE, “I was very excited to perform a tribute to Bob Dylan by singing a cover of “It ain’t me, babe” at the Billboard awards this year. I’m very sad and sorry to say I won’t be allowed to do this. I just wanted to make it very clear that this performance was about me honoring one of my favorite songwriters of all time and has never had anything at all to do with Dr. Luke. I was never going to use a picture of him, speak of him or allude to my legal situation in any way. I simply wanted to sing a song I love to honor an artist I have always looked up to. Thank you for all the continued support.”
There are about five days left until the BBMAs, maybe Dr. Luke will change his mind and let the singer perform on the show. Anything can happen from now until then. So, who knows? Do you think Dr. Luke will change his mind again after this or no? Let me know in the comment section below!
