Dylan O’Brien got in a really scary accident while filming The Maze Runner: The Death Cure awhile back in a stunt gone wrong. As he was pulled from one vehicle, he was hit by another that left him with a concussion, facial fracture, and brain trauma amongst other injuries. He was out for six months before facing his fears and finishing what he started. Dylan has now spoken out about the trauma he went through and revealed that he actually had to get facial reconstructive surgery after nearly breaking one whole side of his face. In an interview with Vulture, Dylan opened up about how difficult his recovery was saying QUOTE - “I really was in a dark place there for a while and it wasn’t an easy journey back. There was a time there where I didn’t know if I would ever do it again … and that thought scared me, too. And then there was a part of me, too, that was feeling pressured and stressed out by the mere fact that I had all of these people still emailing me, checking in. I would get so fucking mad. Like if ever I heard from a producer [who was] seeing when I’d be able to get back on set, I’d fucking go nuts. It would really, really piss me off.”
He then started filming American Assassin where he had to learn fight choreography with his action coordinator Roger Yuan. Dylan revealed that he struggled with heavy emotional and psychological episodes during his recovery. He recounted his experiences telling Vulture QUOTE - “Sometimes I’d literally show up at the gym having a panic attack, and my trainer would be like, ‘All right, let’s just go get breakfast.’ I can’t give enough credit to him …he was really there for me, and not just like a trainer where it’s like, ‘Well, come on, man, I gotta pump you up.’ He cared more about my mind and the state that I was in.” Dylan said that his dad and girlfriend Britt Robertson also played huge roles in his recovery and were there by his side to support him.
After having now finished The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf and American Assassin, Dylan said QUOTE - “Coming out of the other side of all this is basically a whole new chapter, and I think I will be going about it differently. I’m excited to have more balance going forward. Like, I’m not somebody I don’t think who’s going to do three or four movies a year and feel like I have to constantly pump them out. I think there’s something to be said about pacing yourself.” Specifically speaking about Teen Wolf and the Maze Runner, Dylan said he’s ready to see what the future holds telling Vulture – “It’s the first time that I’ll be operating in my career without those two roles, really. It’s good, though, to not have that safety net.”
Dylan has definitely been through a lot and no doubt has a promising future ahead of him. What do you guys think about Dylan’s recovery process?
