Winning Best New Artist at the Grammys is a pretty big deal for, well, any new artist in the music industry. However, many seem to believe that that specific category is actually cursed. Think about it, when was the last time you heard from some of their past winners like Esperanza Spalding? And if you’re wondering who Esperanza Spalding is, she was actually the artist that beat out Justin in that very category at the 2011 Grammys.
Anyway, last night, after Alessia Cara beat out Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, and SZA for the award, TMZ managed to catch up with Justin to ask him about his thoughts on her win. When the reporter asked Justin if he thought the Best New Artist award was cursed, all he said was QUOTE, “I don’t know. Could be.” HOWEVER, from the looks of his demeanor, we can all safely assume that Justin has his fingers crossed that Alessia will break the so called cursed.
While this night was an exciting and unforgettable night for Alessia, the Grammy winner made a choice to stop celebrating to defend herself against everyone who had something to say about her accomplishment. Alessia took to Instagram to write a lengthy message to all the haters.
She wrote QUOTE, “To address the apparent backlash regarding winning something I had no control over: I didn’t log onto grammy.com and submit myself. That’s now how it works. I didn’t ask to be submitted either because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. I’m aware that my music wasn’t released yesterday, I’m aware that yes, my music has become fairly popular in the last year. But I’m trying very hard to use the platform I’ve been given to talk about these things and bring light to issues that aren’t fair, all while trying to make the most of the weird, amazing success I’ve been lucky enough to have.” Hopefully that statement was enough to silence some of the haters in the world.
