Fantasy TV fans will be thrilled to know that the highly anticipated TV adaptation of The Witcher, based on the beloved book series, and also later the inspiration for a mega popular videogame series, is fully underway at Netflix. And it looks like it’s now full steam ahead with showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, announcing the casting of its two female leads, via a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
She revealed Freya Allan of Into The Badlands and Anya Chalotra of Wanderlust have been cast as Ciri, a princess, and Yennefer, a sorceress, of Vengerberg, respectively, and will join Henry Cavill who will lead the series as Geralt of Rivia. According to Deadline, "The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together." Geralt also finds his love interest in Yennefer.
Hissrich also took to her Twitter to share the news writing QUOTE “I couldn't be more thrilled about our ever-growing #Witcher family. Anya, Freya, and the rest of this jaw-dropping cast will slay monsters, your hearts, and everything else we put in front of them.”
And with the casting news this week, Netflix also gave us more insight into the female leads.
"Yennefer is daring and bold, shrewd beyond belief. Ciri is a feisty iconoclast just learning her role in world events.” Already, hopeful viewers are seeing major parallels between these characters and the characters we’ve come to love in our current fantasy obsessions, Game of Thrones and Shadowhunters. Not to mention the overall fantasy genre is really at the forefront of this series much like Game of Thrones and Shadowhunters, where a lot of the stories and plotlines could not exist if it weren’t for crucial fantasy elements. But the talk about similarities between The Witcher series more notably, Game of Thrones, has been around for quite a while, so hopefully that means we have something to fill the enormous GOT hole in our hearts.
Plus, Shadowhunters has been off the air for what already feels like FOREVER and we’re still not over it, so it’s definitely time to introduce a new fantasy show, and according to reports, we can expect to see The Witcher late 2019/early 2020… perfect timing!
