The night sky filled with fireworks in a small village in Ulu Tatau as the local community joined MLNG and its contractors to celebrate a fruitful communion in the inlands of Sarawak. The visitors lined up to enter the longhouse, and the longhouse folk lined up to give their guests a warm welcome, as the MLNG Outreach Programme at SK Nanga Penyarai came to an end.
As MLNG's annual major Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme, the event was made especially meaningful this year as MLNG and its contractors joined forces to help improve the lives of the students at SK Nanga Penyarai.
In the two days leading to the closing ceremony, volunteers from MLNG gathered at the school and conducted fun learning, sports, and recreational activities. Subject matter experts from MLNG's Health, Safety, and Environment section also gave talks on safety and health to the village folk and students. These talks are given to ensure the students and their parents are aware of the importance of a holistic and comprehensive education.
As works came to a wrap, all the participants gathered at the massive Rumah Malo for an overnight celebration, made better by the scrumptious delicacies, live band, karaoke, ngajat dances, and a special dance by the Beketan people who reside in Ulu Tatau.
Guest of honour at the closing ceremony, Yang Berhormat Datuk John Sikie Tayai, the elected representative for Kakus and Assistant Minister of Arts and Culture lauded MLNG's efforts in his speech at the event, noting that due to the location of SK Nanga Penyarai, the school was in dire need of assistance.
"Witnessing the transformation of the school through the contributions of MLNG and its partners, I am deeply moved by their efforts which have no doubt help create more excitement and enthusiasm for these students to learn. I would thus like to urge the 105 students of SK Nanga Penyarai to not take for granted the assistance provided by them, and strive to achieve excellence to make these contributions worthwhile," he added.
The headmaster of SK Nanga Penyarai, Mr Ibrahim Setok, was moved to tears during his speech as he thanked MLNG and the contractors for the major wave of change they have brought to the rural school. He further added that this was the largest contribution the school has received during his residency there. He went on to reassure that the faculty at the school will do their utmost to ensure that the students receive quality education that would help them carve out a brighter future.
