After being arrested for peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, Shailene Woodley has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought upon her.
Shailene has been charged with one count of misdemeanor criminal trespass as well as one count of misdemeanor engaging in a quote on quote “riot.”
Shailene did not choose to make her plea present in court, but her attorney entered the plea for her yesterday and if the case goes to court, Shailene’s team has requested that media coverage be expanded which would allow cameras to be permitted inside the court room to document the process as well as to inform the general public further about the controversies surrounding the building of the pipeline. Shailene was one of many who were arrested during the peaceful protests which is controversial in itself because it was reported that the protesters did vacate the premises when asked to leave but were arrested anyway. Following her arrest, Shailene detailed the situation saying QUOTE -“I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I was not allowed to continue.” After waiting around for several minutes, she and the other protesters were arrested.
She also shared a message on her instagram last week following her arrest saying QUOTE - “One day, baby, we’ll sing our poetry. The words dripping from our tongues wet with ripened patience. And the lyrics, the sweet fruits born from the seeds our aging hands are now sowing. #protectcleanwater #iamonyourside”
Time will only tell what will come of the charges, but kudos to Shailene for sticking up for what she believes in.
