Normally Daniel Keem, who runs the YouTube channel Drama Alert, reports on other people’s drama. But on Sunday, he found himself wrapped up in some drama of his own.
Earlier that day, Demi Lovato released a personal statement regarding her overdose. In the note, which was posted on Instagram, Demi thanked her family, friends and fans for their continued support and said she would be taking time to focus on her recovery and sobriety.
But it was the first part of the statement that Keem took an issue with. Demi wrote QUOTE: “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or faded with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”
Keem took to Twitter to call out Demi for her lack of accountability in the statement. He wrote QUOTE: “Drugs are for losers. Demi should have said that in her statement. Not ‘addiction is a illness’ that makes it sound like there’s no choice but there was a choice. You don’t come out of the womb with a crack pipe. At some point u made a bad choice & did drugs. Don’t be a loser!”
His tweet stirred up reactions on both sides. While some agreed that doing drugs is a choice, others were quick to point out that addiction is, in fact, an illness.
One person replied QUOTE: “No....sorry. you can't change actual definitions. The scientific community has come to the conclusion that addiction is an illness. Drugs may be a choice but addiction is not.”
Another person responded QUOTE: “Idk why this is even a debate when it’s an actual fact that addiction is a mental illness. This is like arguing that global warming doesn’t exist.”
Despite the backlash from his statements, Keem didn’t back down. He tweeted QUOTE: “At one point in my life many years ago I did a lot of coke in the club scene. I was being a loser. So I have no problem calling any other druggy a loser.”
Addiction is something people have to battle their whole life, so relapsing after six years of sobriety doesn’t exactly make somebody a “loser.” After all, Demi is in rehab now and focused on her recovery. But what do you guys think? Do you agree with Keem, or do you think he was being ignorant? Let us know down in the comments. Thanks for watching Clevver News; I’m your host, Emile Ennis.
