YouTubers, Parkland Students, and more react to the YouTube HQ shooting.
For many content creators and influencers, this one hits close to home.
Yesterday afternoon it was reported that an active shooting was taking place at YouTube HQ in San Bruno, California. A woman in her 30s opened fire at an outdoor cafe on the grounds of the facility, shooting and wounding three people before turning the gun on herself. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, but it’s been reported that the woman may have had a grudge against YouTube for “restricting her videos”.
The YouTube shooting comes just months after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and just weeks after the March For Our Lives.
Dozens of YouTubers tweeted their sadness, frustration, and concern over this latest shooting, especially since it hits close to home for many of them, and many have visited the YouTube headquarters in Northern California before.
When news of the active shooting broke out, iJusting Tweeted QUOTE, “So scary hearing about @YouTube situation. Afraid to retweet anything that might not be factual but I’m hoping that everyone is okay”.
Meanwhile Tyler Oakley Tweeted QUOTE, “catching up now on what's happening at @YouTube HQ. hoping everyone is safe & secure. yet again, hoping for less access to guns, & as a direct result, less possibility for gun violence.”
Many others also called for gun policy changes in the wake of the shooting. Jake Paul Tweeted QUOTE, “Unbelievably upset & sick.. YouTube HQ.. my thoughts & prayers go out to the amazing team there.. I hope you all stay safe. No one should have to go through something so horrific. I have been inside that exact building & it’s scary to even say that..We need change…now!”
While Hannah Hart also called for action, writing QUOTE, “My heart breaks for our @YouTube family... As we wait for information, this is the only acceptable time for thoughts and prayers for survivors…”
Students from Marjory Stoneman High School, who’ve been extremely vocal in the movement to get stricter gun laws, also responded to the YouTube shooting on social media. Carmen Lo tweeted QUOTE, “Concerts. Airports. Movie Theatres. Shopping areas. Churches. Schools. And now work places... This is an American problem. People of @YouTube, we are with you”.
Student Delany Tarr echoed those sentiments, writing QUOTE, “Again. And Again. And Again. Our hearts are with you Youtube. Stand strong, while we stand up for change. Enough is enough.”
Actress Bette Midler also spoke out about the shooting, and directly tweeted at President Trump after he sent out a message of thoughts and prayers. She responded to his tweet QUOTE, “Mr. Trump, you know in your heart that no one needs or wants your "thoughts and prayers"...what people long for is to feel safe and secure in their schools and workplaces and houses of worship. You nearly stood up to the NRA. What changed your mind??”
