All the moon men have been handed out at the 2014 VMAs, and there were certainly some exciting and surprising victories. What’s up you guys, welcome back to Clevver’s Trophy Life where we’re breaking down all of the big winners – and some of the biggest snubs – from MTV’s biggest night aka the Video Music Awards.
So let’s start things off with the Holy Grail – Video of the Year, which ultimately went to Miley Cyrus for her emotional “Wrecking Ball” music video. And speaking of emotional, Miley kept that theme going by having a young man named Jessie deliver the victory speech for her. He gave an impassioned speech about the homeless youth all over the world – something he knows a bit about since he’s said that he’s homeless himself. He urged people to take action, and we have to give Miley props for using this platform for something so powerful and moving. She herself was quite moved by it all as she watched on with tears in her eyes. You gotta admit, this is DEFINITELY a 180 from Miley’s antics from the 2013 VMAs. This is just proof that a lot can change in a year.
And now, shifting gears a little bit, let’s talk about the other big winners of the night! Nabbing the moon men for Best Female Video and Best Male Video, we have Katy Perry for “Dark Horse” and Ed Sheeran for his catchy tune “Sing.”
As far as Best Pop Video, Ariana Grande scored that award – her first moon man ever! – beating out other artists such as Pharrell, Iggy Azalea, John Legend, and Jason DeRulo thanks to her retro video for “Problem.”
For Best Hip Hop Video, Drake won big for his video for “Hold on We’re Going Home” where he was victorious over Eminem, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, and Childish Gambino.
Continuing her best year EVER, Lorde also won her very first moon man for Best Rock Video on “Royals” beating out other acts such as Imagine Dragons and The Black Keys. It should go nicely with her Grammys, don’t you think?
As far as the fan-voted MTV Artist to Watch there was some seriously stiff competition, but Fifth Harmony won over Sam Smith, Charli XCX, Schoolboy Q and even Five Seconds of Summer! Congrats to the girls!
While we’re super stoked for all of the winners, one of the biggest surprises of the night has to be the fact that Iggy Azalea did not win ONE moon man for “Fancy.” What is up with that you guys?! The video is so genius – a recreation of Clueless?! How could you not love that! Though we’re bummed she didn’t win anything, there’s always next year, right?
