It’s been an incredible year for TV and film, but with SO many great performances, shows, and movies, there’s bound to be some Golden Globe upsets…
So let’s start with the good stuff. Fans of Netflix’s epic 80s nostalgia hit, Stranger Things, will be thrilled to hear that the show AND lead actress Winona Ryder got nods for Best TV Drama and Best Actress in a TV Drama, respectively.
Deadpool fans can also celebrate the film and its star Ryan Reynolds snagging nominations--especially considering how close that movie was to never getting made in the first place! Another movie that stole the Hollywood Foreign Press’s heart was La La Land--starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling--which grabbed nods for Best Musical or Comedy, Best Director, AND Best Actor and Actress for its two stars.
As for the biggest surprises, Mandy Moore grabbed a supporting actress nomination for her career-making work in This Is Us, which is a very happy surprise for fans of the tear-jerking series. And speaking of This Is Us, the show’s nomination for Best TV Drama makes it the first NBC drama to snag a nod in this category since Heroes--so no doubt everyone at the network is jumping for joy right now.
And now for the biggest snubs this year...let’s start off with Lauren Graham not receiving recognition for her outstanding performance in Gilmore Girls! The only explanation for this is the Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t binge-watch the show on Thanksgiving along with the rest of us, and therefore completely missed out on the incredible talent, wit, and heart Lauren brought to the beloved revival.
And speaking of Gilmore Girls, while Milo Ventimiglia, aka Jess, may not have had enough to do in the Netflix series to receive a nomination, surely his work in This Is Us was good enough to snag him one, right?! We’re thrilled about Mandy Moore getting a nod, but completely shocked that Milo didn’t get the recognition that he so deserved.
Another upset came from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was completely shut out his year, despite having a long list of great comedic actors and actresses on its roster--including its wildly talented and adorable star, Ellie Kemper.
Other shows that were completely and surprisingly shut out include House of Cards AND Orange Is the New Black, which is especially shocking because they’ve been previous Golden Globe favorites for years now.
As for other surprise snubs, fans of Westworld will be floored to find out Anthony Hopkins was nowhere to be found on the nominations lists, and you KNOW Taraji P. Henson, who actually WON last year for Best Actress in a TV drama, is not going to be happy about her own snub--as she should be. Maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press wasn’t a fan of her handing out cookies after she won last year--though we can’t see how anyone could’ve had a problem with that, it was one of the highlights of the show!
