: Nominations for the 2016 Emmy Awards are finally in and you’ll never guess who’s in the lead with the most noms this year – or maybe you will.
If you guessed ‘Game of Thrones’ as the show with the most nominations, you are completely right; to no one’s surprise, the television phenomenon that is’ Game of Thrones’ isn’t slowing down any time soon. The HBO show is in the lead with a whopping 23 nominations, one less than the amount of noms they earned last year. The show earned a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category alongside ‘The Americans,’ ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘Downton Abbey,’ ‘Homeland,’ ‘House of Cards,’ and ‘Mr. Robot’ and a number of their cast members managed to snag a three nominations in the Supporting Actress and two in the Supporting Actor in a Drama category.
Meanwhile, newcomer and limited series ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story’ came in hot and followed GoT with 22 nominations and ‘Fargo’ came in third for the most nominations with 18.
With SO much good TV on within the last year, there’s no surprise that a handful of new shows and first timers made it onto the list. Both ‘Mr. Robot’ and ‘The Americans’ are newcomers in the Outstanding Drama Series category while ‘black-ish’ and ‘Master of None’ are new to the Outstanding Comedy Series category and they’re up against show veterans like ‘Modern Family,’ ‘VEEP,’ ‘Transparent,’ ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,’ and ‘Silicon Valley.’ ‘black-ish’ and ‘Master of None’s’ respective lead actors, Anthony Anderson and Aziz Ansari, are also up for the Lead Actor in a Comedy.
Since we’re on the topic of newcomers to the award show, Tom Hiddleston managed to grab himself his first Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for his work in The Night Manager. Time will only tell if the actor will show up to the show with Taylor Swift in tow.
Moving on, Amy Schumer managed to grab two nominations herself. The comedienne is up for the Lead Actress in a Comedy award and she’s got some pretty tough competition. Other actresses up for the same award are Ellie Kemper, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Laurie Metcalf, Tracee Ellie Ross, and Lily Tomlin. Amy is also in the running for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy alongside dynamic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Melissa McCarthy, Christine Baranski, Laurie Metcalf, and Melora Hardin.
Sadly, Shonda Rhimes’ TGIT line-up was unjustly snubbed from this year’s list. Neither ‘Scandal’ nor ‘How To Get Away with Murder’ was nominated for Outstanding Best Drama Series, but her two lead actresses managed to nab their own respective nominations. Viola Davis is nominated in the Lead Actress in a Drama category for ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ and she’s up against the likes of Claire Danes, Taraji P Henson, Tatiana Maslany, Keri Russell, and Robin Wright, while Kerry Washington grabbed a nom for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for ‘Confirmation.’
