Because people typically like to hear the bad news before the good news, let’s start with the snubs. In the Best Song category, Paul Walker’s tribute “See You Again” from Furious 7 didn’t earn a nomination, in the Best Supporting Actor category, Jacob Tremblay aka the brilliant 9 year old from Room, didn’t snag a nomination, Straight Outta Compton didn’t land a nom for Best Picture, but at least was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. The Director of Bridge of Spies, Steven “god amongst men” Spielberg wasn’t nominated, Star Wars didn’t land in the Best Picture category, no Michael Keaton or Liv Schreiber for Spotlight, and Quentin Tarantino didn’t get diddly squat for The Hateful Eight.
All of which is extremely unfortunate but on the bright side, there were many performances that DID receive the nominations they deserved.
The Revenant kicked butt, leading with 12 nominations including the man that everyone wants to see take that stage, Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m literally going to be sweating when his category is announced but he has to beat out fellow nominees, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender, and Eddie Redmayne. As for Actors in a Supporting Role, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Mark Ruffalo, Mark Rylance, and Sylvester Stallone all received nominations. In the best leading actress category, Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Charlotte Rampling, Sur-sha Ronan, and Jennifer Lawrence all received nominations. I’d like to take a pause to point out the fact that Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for an Oscar 4 times and she’s 25. The woman is slaying life. In the supporting actress category we have Jennifer Jason, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Alicia Vikander, and Kate Winslet and for Best Picture the nominees are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight. Now as I mentioned before, the best original song category is sparking a bit of an uproar for the “See You Again” snub, however “Earned It” from Fifty Shades, “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre, and “Till It Happens To You” which was co-written by Lady Gaga, are all in the running for the Oscar. And shout out to Lady Gaga who just won a Golden Globe and is now an Oscar nominee. Dreams come true people.
The Oscars will be hosted by Chris Rock this year on February 28th.
