Gigi Hadid recalls the terrifying attack on her from a male stranger last Thursday, and the heroic act of bravery she hopes will resonate with young women.
She may be a grade-A supermodel, but Gigi Hadid proved that she’s also a stand-out super HERO.
It wasn’t exactly all glitz and glamour at Milan Fashion Week last Thursday as Gigi was exiting the Max Mara show when an attacker, who is notorious for crashing red carpets, grabbed her by the waist and picked her up, causing her to fight back with everything she had in her. The entire event was captured on video, and quickly made its way through headlines last week, when it then became a heroic act of female empowerment.
Gigi penned a detailed letter about her experience in Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter which was published today, recalling the event and her initial reaction: to fight back. She began the letter writing QUOTE, “I played volleyball, and my coaches talked about muscle memory. I started boxing two years ago and I always remembered that. Since then, I hadn't been in a situation that forced me to fight back, but it just came out when he grabbed me—it wasn't a choice. I do have that fighter in me.”
Gigi then revealed that she knew she had every right to act the way that she did, however, she felt angered after the first headline dropped claiming that she was not ‘model behavior’ after lashing out and throwing elbows in the man’s face after he picked her up. She wrote, “That's when I really got pissed. First of all, it was a woman who wrote the story with that headline. What would you tell your daughter to do? If my behavior isn't model behavior, then what is? What would you have told your daughter to do in that situation?”
And speaking of daughters, when Gigi’s mom, Yolanda Hadid got word of her daughter as the victim of an attack, she praised her for her bravery, texting Gigi, saying ‘Good girl’. Gigi also credited her mom saying QUOTE, “My mom has taught me the power of my instincts since I was a kid.” Yolanda even dedicated an Instagram post to Gigi, with the photo of her mid-attack, writing QUOTE, “Bravo Gigi for defending yourself and standing up for what is rightfully yours, your mind, body and soul should not be touched by anyone unless you want to........... “
Along with many other ways to describe the super model, humble is most definitely one of them. Gigi ended her letter saying that she didn’t feel like it was a ‘heroic act’ in the moment and that it was QUOTE, “just what I had to do. It's very touching to me that people see it that way. I know people are put in much worse situations every day and don't have the cameras around that provoke social-media support. I just want to use what happened to me to show that it's everyone's right, and it can be empowering, to be able to defend yourself.”
Well those sure sound like the words of a hero to me, but most importantly we’re just glad she’s ok.
