It’s all fun and games until someone’s secret third limb is revealed for the entire public to relish in… and that’s exactly what happened after Vanity Fair’s recent Hollywood issue was released just this week. The famous Hollywood issue, photographed by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, is published during every award show season, and this year features 12 film stars, including Gal Gadot, Tom Hanks, Zendaya, Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman to name a few. However, many were quick to take aim at the fail that was the post-editing process which resulted in Reese Witherspoon’s third leg, and Oprah’s third hand.
Naturally, this generated a wave of mixed responses from the Internet, some of which are making a joke out of the situation, but some who just aren’t happy with Vanity Fair for failing to correct their mistakes on two of the biggest celebrities, in the freaking world. Regarding Reese’s third leg, BBC reporter Mark Savage wrote, “Imagine the millions of dollars that have been spent digitally removing Reese Witherspoon's third leg from films and TV shows over the years” but clearly Reese’s limb became old news quick after comedian Griffin Newman joked, “Reese’s third leg is old news, folks. We’re all talking about Oprah’s third hand now.”
Quick side note though – I’m just wondering how many editors this issue, in particular, had to go through for them to not notice third limbs just casually hanging from not one, but TWO people. Anyone else? Anyway, I know you’re wondering whether Reese and Oprah are aware of this little photoshop blunder – well they are. And they took it in the actual best way possible.
Reese tweeted a comical response to the mishap, saying QUOTE, “Well...I guess everybody knows now...I have 3 legs. I hope you can still accept me for who I am. (and I will never apologize for snuggling @Oprah .. if you get the opportunity, I highly recommend it;)” Duly noted! Oprah then responded to Reese, saying, “I accept your 3d leg. As I know you accept my 3d hand.” This is what true friendship is all about, people!!!
Even Vanity Fair got in on the fun (as if they have any other choice now), tweeting their own response, saying QUOTE, “While we would have loved the exclusive on @RWitherspoon's three legs, unfortunately it's just the lining of her dress. As for @Oprah, how can we expect her to juggle it all with just two hands? (We are correcting this error online.)”
Ok, so in all fairness, I do have to say that this was handled pretty well, and all that matters is that nobody was actually offended by the mistake. BUT, there was one major edit that Vanity Fair brought attention to, and that edit happens to be the digital removal of James Franco from this issue. The magazine released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying QUOTE, “We made a decision not to include James Franco on the Hollywood cover once we learned of the misconduct allegations against him.”
Although Franco has since addressed and denied the allegations set against him by five women and counting, the magazine has since decided it was best to leave him out for obvious reasons, and I can’t say I really blame them… but right now, I gotta hear from you guys – did you find Vanity Fair’s photoshop fail more humorous, orrrrr not so much?
