John Mayer accidentally praises Taylor Swift’s Reputation album.
He might be a Swiftie after all.
The subject behind Taylor Swift’s “Dear John” song is weighing in on her music once again. John Mayer gave an intimate performance and Q&A at the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. At one point during the show John was talking about the creative process behind his single “New Light” when he said QUOTE, “I was thinking about reputation”. After an audience member let out a scream, John realized he needed to clarify what he was talking about. He added, “Not the album, but it’s fine. It’s a fine piece of work.” Nearly one year after it’s release John has given Taylor’s “Reputation” album his stamp of approval.
If you recall, John and Taylor dated for a few months in late 2009. The experience ultimately led Taylor to write the song “Dear John” released on her Speak Now album. Buuuut John wasn’t too thrilled about the dedication. Years later, John slammed the song in an interview with Rolling Stone admitting that he was caught off guard and the lyrics hurt him. John explained QUOTE, “It made me feel terrible, because I didn’t deserve it. It was a really lousy thing to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off-guard. It’s cheap songwriting.”
But according to Taylor, assuming the song is about John is a bit presumptuous. She responded to John’s remarks saying QUOTE, “I never disclose who my songs are about.” Fast forward to 2013 and John may have returned the favor. Many think John’s song “Paper Doll” includes references to Taylor with lyrics such as, “You’re like 22 girls in one”. Given all of this history, we applaud John for speaking highly of Taylor’s latest album. Do you think John was forced into this praise because he said the word “reputation”? Or was he being sincere?
