Katy Perry is opening up about what makes her new album different from anything she’s done before.
It’s been almost 4 years since Katy dropped her last album, Prism, and since then she’s been taking time to herself in her native Santa Barbara, spending time with friends and family and getting back to her roots. She told Entertainment Weekly about the break, saying QUOTE, “The energy is just totally different — it’s not thirsty or desperate or clingy...It’s a really beautiful kind of Zen-like feeling place. I just went there to gather myself and I started making a record in June of last year.”
That record, which apparently started with 40 songs written by Katy, has now been whittled down to 15 tracks. And while we still don’t know the title of the upcoming album, Katy is opening up about what fans can expect from it. She explained of her latest work QUOTE, “It’s really quite brave. Sonically, it’s fun and dance-y and dark and light. It’s all of these things. It definitely is a change.” Katy also commented on how the album is a reflection of her embracing her maturation after entering her 30s, saying QUOTE, “I left my 20s and I’ve gone to my 30s...I’ve embraced. I’ve surrendered. I’ve healed some of my issues with my family, with my relationships. Today I’m sober but I don’t know about tomorrow! One day at a time, right? It’s all kind of beautiful. I built up Katy Perry and she was so fun. And I still am Katy Perry and I love her so much but, at the core, I’m Katheryn Hudson and I think that’s being revealed as I embrace who I really am.”
And as for whether or not the album will have a response to Taylor’s “Bad Blood”, which was allegedly about a nasty feud between her and Katy, Katy gave a very detailed and carefully worded response to the direct question, telling Entertainment Weekly QUOTE, “Well that’s not my question to answer — if it’s about me. I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person...One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that. Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period end of story. But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey. We got to keep it real, honey. This record is not about anyone else! This record is about me being seen and heard so that I can see and hear everyone else!” Okay so it sounds like Katy is letting Karma take the wheel when it comes to settling her feuds, which is definitely not the worst idea we’ve ever heard...
