Kelly Clarkson opened up the Billboard Music Awards with some powerful words about the recent school shooting that happened at Santa Fe High School on Friday, which took the lives of 10 people.
As a mother of four, Kelly struggled to hold it together and she understandably began tearing up within seconds of the show, apologizing profusely for crying. Still, she continued talking about tragedy, which she said is something that’s important to do if we want to see any real change in this country.
Kelly said, QUOTE, “I’m a Texas girl and my home state has had so much heartbreak over the past year, and once again y’all we’re grieving for more kids that have died for just an absolute no reason at all.” She followed that up by explaining that the people behind the awards show wanted her to initiate a moment of silence, but she had some other ideas instead.
Of course, this suggestion was met with plenty of applause because, like Kelly, her fellow musicians and her fellow Americans are tired of seeing this same tragedy repeat itself over and over again.
She hammered her point home by adding that, QUOTE, “Mama’s and daddy’s should be able to send their kids to school, to church, to movie theaters, to clubs. You should be able to live your life without that kind of fear. We need to do better. We need to do better as people. We’re failing our children. We’re failing our communities. We’re failing their families.”
Wow…
After her powerful speech and a short break, the show came back with a more lighthearted Kelly who was clearly ready to change the mood from somber to high-energy with a medley performance of some of this year’s greatest hits by the industry’s most popular artists, including Maren Morris, Sam Smith, Shawn Mendes, Kendrick Lamar and SO many more.
The medley began with an acoustic performance of Maren Morris’ “My Church,” but increasingly got more outrageous as she gradually mixed in Sam Smith’s “Good at Goodbyes,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder,” and so many more.
By the time Kelly got around to mixing in songs like Khalid’s “Young Dumb and Broke,” Bruno Mars and Cardi B’s “Finesse,” Shawn Mendes’s “Holding Me Back,” and Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do,” the performance included backup dancers, tight rope walkers, and even showgirls with pink feathers! Yeah… it got a little crazy!
