Kian Lawley went from being known as a YouTube star to a real Hollywood actor thanks to roles in films like Before I Fall and Shovel Buddies, and was set to get even more screen time in the upcoming movie adaptation of Angie Thomas’ novel, The Hate U Give, which is all about police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.
But while Kian joined Amandla Stenberg, Sabrina Carpenter and Regina Hall as the shot the movie in Atlanta, he will not be in the final version. Yesterday, 20th Century Fox announced that the 22-year-old was fired from the film after a video of him using racial slurs surfaced a few weeks ago.
The studio said in a statement QUOTE “Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behavior, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in The Hate U Give. The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed.”
Many people applauded Fox’s quick and impactful decision to remove Kian from the movie, and while you may expect him to protest, he actually agrees with his firing. The YouTuber issued a statement in a series of tweets apologizing for his past actions and commending the studio for making the right decision.
He tweeted QUOTE “First of all, I am deeply sorry to those that were affected by my choice of language. I understand that I am in the public eye & have many supporters, but none of my actions that took place should be supported. Words have power and can do a lot damage. I own mine and I am sorry. I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past. I understand the impact and I have grown a lot and learned since then. With that being said, I am fully aware of the mistakes I have made and strive every day to become a better me than I was yesterday. We all have a voice, whether it’s big or small, we need to use it to spread love & light. From now on, I plan to use my voice for positive change.”
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Kian has also been dropped by CAA, the talent agency he’s been signed to since 2015, as a result of the video.
It’s great to hear Kian apologize for the video and promise to do better in the future, but actions speak louder than words. I’d like to see him using his voice for positive change as he promised sooner rather than later -- don’t you agree? Do you think Fox made the right move by firing Kian? What do you think of his apology? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below and then click here to find out why people are mad about Logan Paul’s first vlog since the suicide video scandal.
