Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart spoke to Harper’s Bazaar recently and opened up about the not-so-glamorous side of fame. She talked about a moment with her co-star Casey Cott after seeing the Broadway musical Waitress where a group of fans begged them for photos outside. She said that they politely declined, but that the group began asking why they hate their fans. She added QUOTE, “That felt like the most dehumanizing thing... I see them saying, ‘Your fans are what make you,’ and I appreciate the love and support. But you have to understand that I'm not on 100 percent of the time. And I shouldn't be expected to be.”
Despite rising to fame quite quickly with the overnight success of Riverdale, Lili has made it her priority to stay honest about her mental health. She credits landing the role of Betty on Riverdale as the moment that pulled her out of her worst depressive episode she’d ever had. She said QUOTE, “Let's talk about [depression] like it actually is. It’s a very real thing, a day-to-day thing, not just you sitting in a dark room alone. It's something that comes in all shapes and colors and all different scenarios, all different types of people.”
She talks about how surreal it feels to have one on one with fans who share that her being outspoken about mental health has helped them.
One thing that Lili hasn’t quite normalized when it comes to fame is the constant speculation regarding things in her personal life. She mocked the gossip saying QUOTE, “Am I pregnant? Am I dating someone? Am I gay? Am I gaining weight? Am I homophobic? People will always have something to say. I’ve accepted that. It doesn't mean it's not frustrating when people say those things. It's not like it just rolls off my back,”
Moving on to the topic of Riverdale season 3, Lili revealed that she often texts the creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ideas for her character and the script. She said QUOTE, “I feel like I've proven myself to the people I needed to prove myself to. I'm like, ‘I know this girl. I really do.’”
She says that fans can expect a building of friendships in Riverdale. She admits that season 2 was much more about family drama and friendships kind of got lost. Lili is looking forward to more scenes with Camila Mendes’ character Veronica, and Casey Cott’s character Kevin. She added QUOTE, “It's something I'm very much pushing for, that you do see the kids interact more as a group,”
