Taylor Swift is squeezing out one final never-before-heard song, performing on the eve of her Reputation album release, but you may want to grab the tissues for this one.
So do yourself a solid and prepare for infinite teardrops on guitars, bedroom floors, and most likely your best friend’s shoulder.
Tonight is the night, people! Three years in the making and Taylor Swift’s sixth studio album Reputation will be available everywhere worldwide – but it wouldn’t be in true Taylor fashion if she didn’t ring in her album release night with a bang, AKA her first performance of a brand-new song in three whole years, just hours before the album drops.
We were already told last week that a performance of a song off Reputation would take place during ABC’s TGIT night in between a new episode of Scandal, but it’s been further confirmed that Taylor will be performing an emotional ballad called “New Years Day”, as seen by a brand new 15-second preview clip that’ll have you wishing you’d have worn waterproof mascara today…
K, was anyone else the slightest concerned-slash-already tearing up when she took that long breath?! I’m sensing some “All Too Well” 2.0 vibes here… But as you can see, the teaser was recorded during Taylor’s Rhode Island Secret Sessions as she sits at a piano surrounded by a group of her biggest fans, but the best is clearly yet to come, so set your DVRs for 9 p.m. eastern time.
But speaking of “New Years Day”, once Taylor revealed the Reputation tracklist, naturally, a gazillion fan theories generated just from the song titles alone. Many fans have mixed feelings about what “New Years Day” could actually be about, but a few in particular have caused the Swiftie fan base to freak the eff out.
First up is the Harry Styles theory – yeah, apparently this is still a thing, but fans have taken notice to the fact that the Haylor breakup went down just days after New Years Day back in 2013 when the two jetted off to the British Virgin Islands on January 1st, but Taylor ended leaving on a boat three days early. One Twitter user seemed rather sure of this theory, writing, “ppl saying haylor is dead but track 15 is called new year’s day and we all know what happened in 2013??? OPEN YOUR EYES”.
And the second theory about this song is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Fans are now speculating that this could be Taylor’s official engagement announcement to Joe Alwyn. Okaaay let’s pump the brakes for a sec. For one, she DID tell fans to say that any and all love songs will forevermore be about Joe, but last New Years would’ve marked like 2 months of dating… Fans have been tweeting about the possibility of the two being engaged, when another responded to one tweet, saying, “Seriously it makes sense! “Every lover known in comparison is a failure.” And if she is engaged — why write any songs about exes?” and another fan wrote, “I’ve been saying it forever. MARK. MY. WORDS. The necklace means way more than jewelry!”
Ok, so we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up on the whole Jaylor engagement theory, but thankfully there’s only a few more hours until Tay’s television performance, and DUH HER REPUTATION ALBUM RELEASE. Clearly all my chill has been lost, but I want to know your thoughts on Taylor’s performance and what you think “New Years Day” is really about, so hit us up down here in the comments, and after that, click right over here to see even more Reputation theories based on the tracklist.
