ABC’s remake of the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing aired last night and the internet is not happy about it. Today’s episode is brought to you by the Un-carrier®. With unlimited data from T-Mobile®, the party never ends.
To put it kindly, while watching this remake, audiences did not have the time of their lives.
For some unknown reason, ABC felt inclined to remake Dirty Dancing with Abigail Breslin and turn it into a three hour special that delved deeper into the iconic characters’ storylines, tackled some social issues, and added a bunch of subplots. The original film starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze and became an all-time classic gifting us with iconic scenes, songs, and that famed lift. Because of this, fans of the original definitely had their reservations about the remake starring Abigail Breslin, Colt Prattes, Sarah Hyland, Debra Messing, and Nicole Scherzinger because naturally no one wants to see a classic ruined. But judging from the reaction after it aired last night, the consensus seems to be that it shouldn’t have happened. Twitter held nothing back and gave a whole new meaning to the saying that “everyone’s a critic.” One person said – “The remake of 'Dirty Dancing' is the most traumatizing thing I have witnessed since Election Night '16 #LeaveClassicsAlone.” Another said – “This train wreck is the biggest disrespect to Patrick Swayze. It's horrible, I'd rather get a root canal.” One person watched it on mute and still didn’t like it tweeting – “We're watching #dirtydancing with the sound off, and it's still bad.” Someone compared it to a middle school play saying – “This #DirtyDancing remake is like if an 8th grade musical had a multi-million dollar budget.” One person quoted the famous line from the original and put their own spin on it saying – “Please put baby in the corner. Turn off the lights. Close the door. And never look back.” And you know someone had to say something about the lift. Somebody posted a side by side of the lift from the original and the lift from the remake with the caption– “Expectations vs. Reality.” Needless to say people weren’t too pleased with the remake. From the reactions, the concensus on why it was so bad seems to be because of the botched musical covers, some of which had an excessive amount of autotune, too many subplots, poor casting, and too many deviations from the original storyline.
