The BET Awards are not an award show to ever disappoint when it comes to musical performances, but after last night, this year in particular will be one for the books.
Fans and viewers of the late musical legend Prince, were in for a real treat after tuning into last night’s BET Awards, when not one, but many of the evening’s performers, all dressed in purple, dedicated their time onstage to the late singer. The first of many tributes came just 30 minutes into the show when Dave Chappelle shared a few touching words about Prince, saying QUOTE, “We miss him dearly. But tonight the BET Awards will celebrate the rich legacy of this remarkable genius that we are all so proud of.”
Shortly after, The Roots, Erykah Badu and Bilal kicked off the first of many musical tributes of the evening. Shortly after, it began to sink in that the entire evening was a dedication to Prince as Tori Kelly teamed up with Stevie Wonder for a performance of "Take Me With You." Check it out:
The upbeat track quickly switched gears to the beginning sounds of ‘Purple Rain’ when Jennifer Hudson, appeared in all white and a touch of purple eye makeup and won the crowd over after a mind-blowing performance.
Going into the second hour of the show, singer Maxwell paid tribute by performing Prince’s hit “Nothing Compares To You” and they only seemed to get better and better as Janelle Monae honored the musical legend by recreating his dance moves on top of singing “I Would Die For You” among other hits.
And finally, Sheila E. paid tribute to the late singer by way of recreating his famous dance moves to dressing in true Prince fashion, as she performed a show-stopping medley of his greatest hits to finish off the tribute, when she had the entire audience in tears after honoring her good friend.
Safe to say Sheila, along with the entire list of performers throughout the evening, did the late singer proud. But Prince is no stranger to the BET Awards, as he left his mark many times, including earning the BET Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2010, and also winning several awards including Best Male R&B Artist Award in 2006.
And although Prince is no longer physically with us, his presence was surely felt throughout the evening, leaving the 2016 BET Awards one that viewers will never forget.
