Kendrick Lamar buys out THREE theaters for kids to see Black Panther and fans go WILD with their wardrobe on opening night.
WAKANDA FOREVER.
It’s no secret that everybody and their moms is super excited to go see Black Panther and it sounds like that is exactly what will happen this weekend. Seriously you guys, the movie JUST came out and screenings are sold out left and right. But before we go into all the incredible record-breaking box office things, let’s talk about what Kendrick Lamar is doing for the kids during Black Panther weekend.
Kendrick, being the amazing man he is, teamed up with TDE to host a free screening of the film for kids living in three housing projects in Los Angeles. According The Fader, Kendrick and TDE bought out THREE different theaters for Saturday, February 17th.
While we’re sure these kids are HYPED to see Black Panther during its opening weekend, no one was more excited than the fans who saw the highly anticipated film when it opened. Movie goers got all dressed up in character costumes and traditional African clothing, with a few who attended the premiere a la Eddie Murphy in Coming to America.
One fan shared a photo of himself and his squad posing in front of the Black Panther movie poster and wrote QUOTE, “Had to do it one time for the culture!” While another made it a point to show their commitment to the film – even though they were sick -- by tweeting, “Homegirl was sick but this Rwandese-South African gyal was not about to see Black Panther in jeans, we ain’t about that!” That’s pretty incredible if you ask me.
And now, onto all the box office craziness! Black Panther is projected to make 165 million PLUS and the film could become the biggest launch ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe stand-alone movie. But such a number isn’t surprising because again, with all the hype behind it, Black Panther is receiving more screen time than some of the other movies that are currently out.
For example, Hollywood’s Arclight theater screened nothing but different showtimes of Black Panther Thursday night. While the website does show that other films like Call Me By Your Name and Fifty Shades Freed are being shown on Friday, it’s Black Panther that’s dominating all the show times for the day.
PROMO: Now, are you guys surprised that Black Panther is doing so well or did you all see it coming because let’s be real, I think EVERYONE decided they were going to see it once the first trailer was released. Anyway, let me know all your thoughts on everything I just talked about in the comment section below.
