The new Taylor is definitely taking a cue from the old Taylor. TMZ has reported that Taylor Swift has legally filed to trademark a handful of “catchphrases” from her new album, and especially from her first single, ‘Look What You Made Me Do,’ including that very title… ‘Look What You Made Me Do.’
Among the list of phrases and titles that Taylor is seeking to own is the already iconic “The Old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now,’ and even the name of her upcoming album, ‘Reputation,’ … And it’s all for the love of merchandise. Pretty soon you can own just about every article of clothing in existence that’s just dripping in the essence of Reputation.
According to TMZ, the documents filed by Taylor and her team suggest that Swifties will soon be able to get their hands on clothing items like t-shirs and bathrobes, and even shoe laces?! Plus, laptop cases, notebooks, guitar picks, and SO. Much. More.
If you’re surprised by Taylor & company making legal moves to get ownership of lyrics that dropped like 6 minutes ago, don’t be. This is actually not a new move for the very business-savy pop star. T-Swift already owns phrases from her 1989 album including “this sick beat” from ‘Shake It Off,’ plus multiple phrases from ‘Blank Space,’ including “could show you incredible things.”
And I should also mention that Taylor even filed for ownership of the name for her fandom, ‘Swifties,’ and the phrase ‘Merry Swiftmas.’ Because hello? Holiday gifts, duh.
