It has been a crazy 24 hours for Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa. After a summer where we barely saw Selena in public and very minimal promotion being done for her new music, fans everywhere were wondering what was going on with their favorite singer.
Back in2015, Sel revealed that she has been battling lupus, an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that can cause kidney failure, and had undergone chemotherapy. She started to open up about her fight with the disease and often promoted foundations that educated others about lupus and donated money to those who are trying to find a cure.
We definitely figured something was up with Selena, but we just thought she was being like her BFF Taylor Swift and staying out of the spotlight for her own well being. Which is why we, along with the rest of the world, was so shocked to find out that she had to have a kidney transplant. Selena posted a photo of her and her donor, Francia, laying in hospital beds holding hands and told fans about the surgery, and thanked her supporters. She wasn’t ready to tell the whole story yet, saying “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
It's obvious that these two had an incredible friendship before the surgery, and now they’re bonded for life. But how are the two girls feeling and what does the road to recovery look like? Selena has been spotted filming her new movie and has been hitting up the red carpet with The Weeknd, but Francia has been staying more low-key.
While both were on bed-rest with very strict diets and no exercising, it is taking Francia’s body a lot longer to adjust to life post-surgery. The surgery was very intense for both, but while Selena was gaining a healthy kidney, Francia’s body was losing one. Even though bodies are 100 percent capable to live with just one kidney, it has taken a larger toll on Francia.
Both girls have since been able to start doing light activity like yoga and pilates, but they have a long road ahead of them. We can’t imagine how Francia’s selfless act has changed so many lives for the better and we can’t wait to hear what they have to say when they’re ready to talk about it openly.
Are you seriously loving Sel and Francia’s friendship and do you think you would ever donate a kidney to a friend in need if you could? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to see how Francia first announced the transplant. I’m Joslyn Davis, thanks for listening.
