Looks like Justin Timberlake’s dancing was the star of his Super Bowl halftime show because nobody could even hear him sing!
Not only were there audio problems, but his Prince tribute also got some flack.
Justin Timberlake was this year's halftime performer and the 14 minute show included a bunch of his biggest hits including “Can’t Stop The Feeling”, “Sexy Back”, and his newest song “Filthy”.
Only problem was…. nobody could hear him! Something must have been off because even his back-up singers were heard crystal clear.
Twitter immediately sparked the conversation with one person saying, “I sure hope Timberlake’s audio is crappy. Otherwise, I’ve turned into an old lady saying “What’s he saying?””
And another tweeting, “I like Timberlake, but this audio feed is like a bootleg from the upper stands”
But that wasn’t the only thing upsetting Super Bowl viewers. Some took issue with Justin’s homage to Prince.
JT played the piano in front of a massive projection of Prince and sang a rendition of “I Would Die 4 You”
People were upset he would even honor Prince because apparently they had some back and forth drama over a decade ago.
According to Variety, at a 2006 post-Emmy Awards party, Prince referenced Timberlake’s song SexyBack saying QUOTE, “For whoever is claiming that they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!”
And then during Justin’s song “Give It to Me,” he had a lyric that reads, “We missed you on the charts last week. Damn, that’s right, you wasn’t there. Now if sexy never left, then why is everybody on my shit? Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it.”
And then there was a moment in 2007 when Timberlake accepted a Golden Globe on Prince’s behalf, and ducked down to make a jab at Prince being 5’3”.
Now all of that couuuuld be chalked up to just some friendly competition, but people couldn’t help but mention a 1998 interview Prince gave where he condemns performing alongside artists from the past.
When asked how he feels about digitally editing artists to perform with and if he would ever do that he said QUOTE, “Certainly not. That's the most demonic thing imaginable. Everything is as it is, and it should be. If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age.”
Someone tweeted regarding the projection, “The Prince tribute would’ve been cool... except Prince specifically said he didn’t want that, right? Even in death, Prince continues to be misunderstood.”
And after the show he appeared live on The Tonight Show to clear up some things and said QUOTE, “I just wanted to use that opportunity to do something special for this city, but most of all, for my favorite musician of all time."
But Justin said he got the OK from a long time friend of Prince’s, Questlove. He said QUOTE, “Questlove is the encyclopedia on music, but I also feel like a gatekeeper on Prince, so if I got the thumbs-up from Questlove, I’m good,” and Questlove responded, “Yeah, it was good.”
