This is the face palm to end all face palms.
It all started when Kendrick Lamar invited a white fan with him on stage over the weekend during his Sunday set at the Hangout Festival in Alabama. The fan, who said her name was Delaney, got the chance to rap “M.A.A.D City” with Kendrick in front of thousands of people. Delaney seemed confident as she started the song, but things quickly took a turn for the worse when she didn’t censor herself when it came to rapping the n-word. Saying it was a cringeworthy scene is the understatement of the century.
After Delaney’s second slip up, Kendrick paused the show and called her out on it.
Delaney tried to brush off the mistake, but the crowd was NOT having it.
Kendrick then asked the crowd if they thought she should stay up there, which was met by a resounding “No” and a flurry of boos. Despite the backlash, Delaney asked to stay on stage and continue the song.
One concertgoer shared what happened next, Tweeting QUOTE, “Being the gracious person he is, he decides to give her another chance even though at this point the whole crowd is against her.”
Her second chance proved futile, as Delaney struggled to get back into the song and messed up the hook before leaving the stage.
Fans took to Twitter to share their reactions, with one user praising Kendrick for getting her offstage, saying QUOTE, “So glad I was able to witness such a historical event”. Another Tweeted QUOTE, “Damn Delaney probably had to hide her face when she left the festival, she really just said the n word on stage with Kendrick Lamar in front of 30,000 people and got called the f—k out”.
A few others took to Twitter to actually defend Delaney, arguing that all she did was sing the lyrics of the song as they were written. One user wrote QUOTE, “I honestly feel so bad for her because if artists don’t want us saying certain words, then don’t put it in your songs for the entire public to hear”. But another fired back, writing QUOTE, “I don't know why you think he has to make songs for people like her. It's his music. His expression he doesn't have to censor himself for anyone else.”
