Following Pink’s medley VMA performance, she took the stage to accept the coveted Michael Jackson MTV VMA Vanguard Award, and delivered quite possibly the most powerful speech of her career.
All in favor of nominating Pink’s acceptance speech for a 2018 Oscar, please show of hands. *raises hand*
The rest of the VMAs have officially been cancelled on account of Pink stealing the show with a stellar performance of past and present hits, and an acceptance speech that unironically centered around self-acceptance and that is sure to go down as one of the most powerful speeches of our time.
Ellen Degeneres presented Pink with the award to which she dedicated entirely to her 6-year-old daughter Willow, who was Pink’s date to the VMAs, along with her husband Carey Hart. The three arrived in matching three-piece suits, which we would soon come to find out that their fashion choice for the evening was entirely tied to the emotional story about her daughter that Pink would soon share with the world.
She began by recalling a moment when she was driving Willow to school one morning as she asked her mom out of the blue QUOTE, “I’m the ugliest girl I know. I look like a boy with long hair.” And what came next is the reason I am completely out of tissues:
Throughout the duration of her speech, Pink spoke directly to her daughter who was watching in the audience. She also revealed she went home and made Willow a power point presentation of androgynous rockstars and artists who lived their truth and owned their differences. She then ended her speech by saying QUOTE, “So, baby girl. We don't change. We take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people change so they can see more kinds of beauty. To all the artists here: I’m so inspired by all of you, thank you for being your true selves. There’s so much rad shit happening right now in music.”
And that, my friends, is how Pink completely SHUT DOWN the VMAs. Such a strong and heartfelt message I’m sure we could all relate to, so right now, I want to hear all your thoughts on Pink’s Vanguard Award acceptance speech, so get to talking down here in the comments, and after that, be sure to click right over here to check out all the highlights from Pink’s medley performance.
