Last night’s MTV VMAs was historic in more ways than one.
Advocate Heather Heyer's mother took the stage and gave an incredible speech to honor her late daughter that left everyone in tears
This years’ VMAs will probably go down in history as one of the most inspiring, inclusive and powerful award shows we have ever seen.
Earlier this year MTV president Chris McCarthy announced that the VMA "Moonman" award is out, and the new "Moon Person" is in. In an interview with The New York Times, Chris said "Why should it be a man? It could be a man, it could be a woman, it could be transgender, it could be nonconformist."
MTV also took inclusive steps by eliminating gender-specific categories at both the MTV Movie & TV Awards and Video Music Awards. The Best Male Video and Best Female Video categories were replaced with the new Artist of the Year award, which was awarded to Khalid.
Last night we got to honor two important people who left us far too soon, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park and activist Heather Heyes who was killed while she was protesting the white supremacists and nazis who had taken over Charlottesville.
Susan Bro, Heather’s mom, took the stage to announce the winner of the Best Fight Against the System award. Susan spoke about her daughter saying “Only 15 days ago, my daughter Heather was killed as she protested racism. I miss her, but I know she is here tonight. I have been deeply moved to see people across the world, the whole world, find inspiration in her courage. Today, I am announcing the launch of the Heather Heyer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will provide scholarships to help more people join Heather's fight against hatred."
Susan’s words of hope and peace didn’t stop there, she went on to announce that in Heather’s spirit to fight off hate, MTV had decided to honor ALL six nominees as winners. “"Big Sean decried violence. Alessia Cara spoke out about body shaming. The Hamilton mixtape and John Legend both took on the targeting of immigrants," she explained. "Logic and Damian Lemar Hudson celebrated diversity. Taboo and Shailene Woodley rebelled against government exploitation."
The nominees are now cemented in history for their actions towards making tomorrow a better place. Although these celebrities are some of the biggest names in Hollywood, we don’t need a star on the walk of fame or millions of dollars to do our part in combating hate.
Susan left us with some final words saying “I look forward to the important work that they, and all of you, will do together to make the world a better, kinder, place,"
We can’t wait for that day, either. What did you think of Susan’s speech and how are YOU planning on working towards a better tomorrow? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to watch Pink’s incredible acceptance speech. I’m Renee Shafii, thanks for tuning in!
