And now, Sel is committed to raising even more awareness and is determined to find a cure for this debilitating disease.
It’s been months since Selena received a kidney transplant due to her lupus and it’s safe to say Sel is doing just fine these days. I meann, did you see her kill it on stage at the AMAs this past weekend? Anyway, about one day after her jaw dropping performance, Selenas jetted over to New York City where she was honored at the Lupus Research Alliance Annual Gala.
Selena turned heads in a beautiful bright yellow gown and while she looked incredible, it was the very honest and candid speech that blew everyone away. Sel started off her speech by saying how honored she felt being there with her lupus community and revealed that she was diagnosed with the disease about five or six years ago.
Selena opened up about what she went through during those years, saying QUOTE, “I’ve been speaking out about my situation to raise awareness about the disease. After undergoing so many tests to monitor my kidneys, my doctors told me I have lupus nephritis, one of those complications from lupus.”
Thankfully, as we all have learned by now, Selena’s best friend Francia Raisa gave her a kidney and according to Sel she’s QUOTE, “…doing quite well now.”
During Selena’s speech, she thanked her doctors who helped her through this difficult time as well as talked about why it’s so important to support the scientists who dedicate their time to learning more about Lupus and finding a cure for it. After her remarks, Sel ended her speech with a message of hope for those who are currently dealing with the autoimmune disease.
“I’d like to see the day when all young women can realize their dreams of life without Lupus. This is why I am committed to the Lupus Research Alliance. So that none of us are alone, especially the young women that I have grown up with and heard many, many stories. I just want to say thank you and I hope we can do something for all of the younger people who need to know what this means.”
