We've got the top winners of the night right here but the real standout winner was diversity. Finally.
The 69th Emmy Awards had me hooked! It was fresh, funny, dare I say hip and colorful. Gina Rodriguez's dress- oh my god. So fun to watch! But let's skip to what we're all here for... the winners.
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series was won by Master of None’s uber talented Aziz Ansari and his co-star Lena Waithe who made history as the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing.
Donald Glover also made history becoming the first black person to win an Emmy for best directing for a comedy series which of course he won for Atlanta. Now… What’s better than one Emmy? Two. D-Glover took home a 2nd Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Bravo Atlanta crew.
HULU’s The Handmaid's Tale was one of the biggest winners of the night. The show won best writing and directing for a drama series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a drama, Elisabeth Moss its lead star took home Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, AND the series beat out The Crown, Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, This Is Us, House of Cards and Westworld for Best Drama Series. Talk about some tight competition!
Some of SNL’s cast received Emmy love, including a tearful Kate McKinnon and a passionate Alec Baldwin.
HBO’s Big Little Lies won big… and that’s no lie… with Alexander Skarsgärd AND Laura Dern each taking an Emmy home, and Nicole Kidman beat out Reese Witherspoon for Outstanding Lead Actress in a limited series. Louie Anderson of Baskets and John Lithgow of the Crown took home Emmys.
Riz Ahmed kept the diversity going when he won for The Night Of.
Sterling K. Brown brought us to tears for the umpteenth time following his well-deserved Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for This Is Us. Too bad he was rudely cut off by the music track.
HBO’s VEEP won almost every award they were nominated for, including Outstanding Comedy series, beating out Atlanta, Blackish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, however, made Emmy history when she took home her sixth best actress Emmy for her role on "Veep" becoming the single performer with the most Emmys for one role.
