The competition at the VMAs this year was fiercer than EVER, but only the best of the best went home with their very own Moon Person trophy
The MTV Video Music Awards always attracts the heaviest hitters in the music scene, and this year was no different. And while all of our favorite artists, including Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony, Kendrick Lamar, and dozens more, were nominated for awards this year, only a select few can now call themselves 2017 VMA winners.
Best New Artist went to Khalid and we could NOT be more excited for him, or more obsessed with his entire American Teen album. Hip Hop artist Lil Uzi Vert also had an exciting night, beating out the likes of Ed Sheeran, Fifth Harmony, and Demi Lovato to take home the Moon Person for “Song of the Summer” for his smash hit “XO Tour Llif3”.
Fifth Harmony were ecstatic to take home their first VMA as a foursome, winning for their hit “Down” featuring Gucci Mane in the Pop video category. The girls were clearly shocked upon hearing their name called, and they all got a bit emotional during their acceptance speech.
Hey, if I beat out Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles, AND Shawn Mendes for a Pop music award, I’d be emotional, too!
In other notable categories, the best Hip Hop video unsurprisingly went to the great Kendrick Lamar for “Humble”, the best Dance video went to Zedd and Alessia Cara for their hit, “Stay”, and the Moon Person for Best Collaboration went to Zayn and Taylor Swift for “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”. Not gonna lie, we kinda expected that one to go to Rihanna, DJ Khaled, and Bryson Tiller for “Wild Thoughts”, but trust Taylor Swift to sweep in the only category she was qualified to be nominated in. Taylor didn’t make it to the show in person this year to accept her and Zayn’s award, BUT we have a sneaking suspicion that she’ll make an appearance next year, when her video for “Look What You Made Me Do” will qualify to be nominated. And you know it will be, because it was EVERYTHING.
Of course the two BIGGEST categories of the night were “Artist of the Year” and “Video of the Year”. Artist of the Year went to our guy Ed Sheeran, which was a HUGE win for the “Shape of You” crooner because he beat out Lorde, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, AND Bruno Mars for the award. A humbled Ed happily accepted the award and called out the fact that it was only his second VMA win in his career.
Like how is that even possible?! If you’re a big Kendrick fan and you’re bummed Ed beat him out for Artist of the Year, don’t worry because Kendrick got his when he won the coveted “Video of the Year” award for Humble.
Humble also took home Moon Persons for Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography, so it was pretty much destined to win the biggest video award of the night.
In addition to all the video and best artist awards, Pink was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the show, and her inspiring speech completely stole our hearts and was definitely our favorite acceptance speech of the night…
This goes without saying but I think we all need way more Pink in our lives.
